The Belgian started the Australian opening
looking to be on great form, taking the first 5 rounds in straight
sets
Samantha Reeves put up a struggle, but lost to
the Belgian 6-2 6-1 in round one. Petra Mandula had worse luck in
round 2, losing 6-0 6-0. In the third, Clijster mirrored her first
round with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Tatiana Putchek of Belarus.
Kim went on to beat Coetzer in the fourth round
6-3 6-1, and Myskina in the quarter finals with a 6-2 6-4 result.
It wasn't until the semi-finals that Clijster
gave a way the set. She played Serina Williams in her toughest match
of the tournament which was also to be her last. She lost 6-4 3-6
5-7 to the American.
